Southern Thailand and especially Krabi province has some of the best known climbing locations of Thailand. Many of the routes start directly on the beach and the views are often magnificent. There are suitable routes for the beginner as well as the experienced climber.
After the climb you can relax at the beach or the pool, enjoy a massage and some delicious Thai food. Some of the climbing locations offer lots of nightlife, others are very quiet, there is something for everybody’s taste. Tonsai and Railay
Tonsai and Railay in Krabi province have some of the best known climbing locations in Thailand, like the famous 1-2-3 crag. Railay is one of the best places in Thailand to learn climbing as it has a number of easy routes, very well suited for beginners. There are hundreds of routes here of different levels of skill, the views are often stunning and rewarding.
North of Ao Nang there is a number of hardly explored and pristine climbing locations for those who are looking for a more off the beaten path experience. In this area, much of the climbing is on limestone rock.
Phuket & Phang Nga
Directly north of Phuket and an easy trip from the crowded beaches lies the much quieter province of Phang Nga. This province is known for its impressive and beautiful limestone mountains. Climbing here often reveals some breath taking scenery. There are many crags and cliffs still hardly explored, since not many climbers go here.
The mainland as well as Koh Yao Noi offer a large number of routes, both for beginners and experienced climbers. Koh Lao Liang and Koh Yao Noi (Koh is island in Thai) have a number of difficult routes more suitable for experienced climbers.
Koh Yao Noi located east of Phuket in Phang Nga Bay is a very different place than nearby Phuket. It is still quiet, natural and unspoiled, far away from the tourist masses. Some climbing routes start right off the beach. These areas offer a challenging and rewarding experience in nature, please keep it beautiful and clean by not littering.
Climbing in North Thailand
Climbing in North Thailand offers a nice alternative for those who want to get away from the tourist crowds and are looking for a different atmosphere.
The best known crag of the North is the so called “Crazy Horse Buttress”, an immense limestone mountain at about 30 minutes drive from Chiang Mai where climbing is possible all year. There are close to 200 routes here and many are spectacular climbs. These routes are in varying degrees of difficulty and different types of climbs, even roof climbs through caves with stalactites.
